About the Artist
Elaine Hochreiter grew up in the Adirondack Mountains and now resides along picturesque Rocky Gorge Reservoir in Howard County. The beauty and serenity of the great outdoors is the inspiration for her vibrant landscape paintings. Awed by patterns of color, shade, and textures, she strives to capture the mood and character of her subject. Her representational style often shows a path to draw the viewer into the image to feel its tranquility.
Ms. Hochreiter graduated with a BS in Art Education from SUNY Buffalo and a MEd from Boston University. In her junior year she studied art in the hillside Tuscan city of Siena, Italy.
Her art journey involves many facets of expression. Summer jobs in college were spent sketching portraits in charcoal and pastels of vacationers in historic Albuquerque and on the boardwalk in New Jersey. Her husband’s military career took her around the world and gave her the opportunity to view many of the world’s great art collections and museums. Moving every three years also enabled her to explore a variety of art careers. She taught all levels of art from kindergarten to college in New York, North Carolina, New Jersey, Maryland and at the International School in Bangkok, Thailand. While living in Germany she was employed as an illustrator for the Department of Defense and also worked as a freelance artist and magazine art editor.
Six years ago Ms. Hochreiter left teaching to concentrate entirely on her artwork. She now paints in oils in her Columbia, Maryland studio and paints en plein air in the Adirondacks during the summers. Many of her paintings are of places her family has visited in Europe.
Her paintings have been accepted into juried exhibitions and the Master’s Division of the Central Adirondack Art Show. She also has displayed her work in numerous shops and group exhibitions in New York and Maryland. She is a member of Maryland Art League and Maryland Pastel Society. Ms. Hochreiter is represented by Gallery 3040 in Old Forge, New York.
ARTIST'S STATEMENT
About her work, she says: “As I grow older, the beauty and power of nature captivates me more and more. I’m realizing how our environment, especially our forests, fields, lakes and streams are in peril. Open spaces are lost to tracks of homes, forests are cut down to make space for new roads and buildings, streams and lakes are polluted by fertilizers and herbicides. My goal is to capture the beauty I see in nature and in rustic old structures with their unique architecture, many little known, unseen or forgotten, along seldom-traveled roads. I hope my paintings invite the viewer to look, linger and experience the peacefulness, serenity and tranquil beauty that touched my heart and soul.”
